Tips from Green Builders: Energy Efficient Cooling

At Hebert Design Build, we are known as "green builders." This means that we're committed to designing and building structures that are sustainable, energy efficient, and good for the environment. You can read more about our green building philosophy here.

Of course, not everyone has the luxury of building a new, sustainable home. The good news is that you can work with what you have and take certain steps on your own towards achieving energy efficiency.

Since we're entering the dog days of summer, AC units will be on full blast. This can contribute to our energy costs while affecting our environment (both the one inside and outside our homes). In fact, according to EnergyStar.gov, the average household in the U.S. spends $1900 on energy bills.

Here are some tips for reducing your cooling costs this summer:

1. Plan Filter Fun Time

Okay, so maybe checking the filter on your HVAC system every month doesn't sound like your idea of fun, but trust us when we say this: it's a lot better to check it regularly (and either clean it or swap in a new one) than it is to have your cooling system go bust on the hottest day of the year. EnergyStar.gov recommends changing your filter every three months at a minumum.

2. Think Thermostats. Programmable Thermostats, That Is.

Controlling the temperature in your home, even when you're not there? That's the key to saving an average of $180 a year in energy costs, according to EnergyStar.

3. Remember That the Seal's the Deal

What we mean is make sure ducts are sealed tightly so that the cool air, in this case, stays inside and doesn't get out.
